How do YOU tell the difference between normal "kid stuff" and when it's time to get a professional involved?

The answers are in and it seems that most parents share the same opinion about about when to get a professional involved. It's clear that most parents feel that growing up is difficult and that children need time to work out the struggles they have in life. Parents need to be patient and offer guidance when kids are struggling and room to make their own decisions when appropriate.

The answer to the question seems to be that getting a professional involved is becoming more and more acceptable, especially when parents have run out of answers.  Asking family members and friends for a referral to a therapist they've worked with or know of is a great place to start. It's also perfectly acceptable to have an initial consultation with a child and family counselor before they meet your child. Since therapy is all about relationships, you'll want to feel comfortable with the therapist so you can feel comfortable in dealing with the tough issues ahead.

So when should you look for help? When you've reached the point that you feel uncomfortable with your child's behavior and aren't confident that it will "work itself out".
